Witness was about just that, to be a witness.

An object owned is for the majority an object acquired. Therefore, that moment in time, that exploration of the material worked and the challenges presented do not factor into the understanding of the object. Much of consumer culture is orientated around mass production providing instant solutions to the acquirement of objects. Time is the obstacle to be overcome.

 

Witness was a performance I undertook at Rye Creative in 2023. It invited the people to be observers to the creation of a work and to be a part of its inception. Incorporating a turned vessel capable of shifting on legs; Interaction with the performer caused tilting motions to produce drawings, as ink was dispensed through its wooden appendages.

It is an extension of the performer; Another way in which to view our relationship to objects beyond their acquired status. The whole experience pried into the world of the maker, the artist. Every use of a tool a Performance. It can be a space of Intimacy for the artist, but to be given the opportunity to witness Its creation, to share that span of time which is hidden, is crucial In allowing an object to be truly represented in another dimension, that being time itself.
